The Frassati family was wealthy and influential. Pier's father was a Senator, an Ambassador, and an editor of a popular newspaper, and his mother was a painter. Pier Giorgio used the wealth and education his family gave him to serve the poor directly and work for social justice in political demonstrations. He gave much of his money and time to those in need, and lived a life of frequent and devout prayer. As a vigorous and healthy young athlete who loved to climb mountains, he contracted poliomyelitis and died after immense suffering on July 4, 1925 at the age of 24. Thousands of the poor he served came to his funeral, surprising his family since he had never bragged about the loving work he did for Christ.
