St. Dymphna was the daughter of an Irish King who had gone mad when his wife died. She was Christian, but her pagan father in grief stricken madness demanded that she marry him! Dymphna refused out of love for Christ and her father and fled to Belgium, where she worked caring for the sick. Her father found her, and when she again refused his request he fell into a fit of rage and slew her on the spot. She is the patron of those who suffer from mental illness and those who care for them.
